CPAP is the treatment of choice for sleep apnea because it is virtually 100% effective, eliminates the risks of heart disease, has no significant side effects, and is relatively inexpensive. Some patients adapt to CPAP right away, but many go through a period of transition and experience some difficulties with the device, as it can take some time to get used to. The key to helping patients adapt to CPAP is close follow up with our office. After pressure is adjusted and a mask selected, the patient will be seen as often as necessary to maintain compliance and manage follow up. It is not uncommon to make changes in the way the pressure is delivered, mask options, and even CPAP machines.
